Most RV guides spend three paragraphs on sewer connections and then pivot to campground food recommendations. Meanwhile, you’re standing in a gravel site at 7 PM trying to figure out why raw sewage is pooling around your boot. Let’s skip the fluff and talk about what actually matters when you’re hooking up to a sewer connection, because getting this wrong isn’t just unpleasant. It’s a health hazard, and it can destroy your tank sensors, your seals, and your dignity in front of the entire campground.

The industry loves selling you accessories. Half of them are junk. Here’s what you genuinely need versus what collects dust in your wet bay.
Non-negotiable:
A quality sewer hose. Not the thin accordion-style hose that came bundled with your rig. Those fail catastrophically, and at the worst possible times. A sewer hose support. I resisted buying one for my first full year on the road, huge mistake. When your hose sags mid-run, waste doesn’t drain completely, and you’re left with residue that ferments and eats through the interior. Nitrile gloves. The thick ones, not exam-grade paper-thin. Buy by the box.
A hose-end cap with a built-in gasket. That little plastic end cap with no seal? It will fail. Replace it before it does.
Actually optional:
Sewer hose extenders beyond 25 feet total. If you’re regularly needing 30-plus feet to reach the pedestal, you’re probably taking bad sites. A 20-foot hose with a 5-foot extension covers almost every normal situation.
Deodorant treatments in every dump. Enzyme-based treatments help with tank maintenance, sure, but you don’t need to pour something down the drain daily. More on that later.
How to Connect Without Making a Mess
Step-by-step matters here because the sequence is not obvious, and doing it backward means cleaning up something that shouldn’t have left the tank.
Step 1: Confirm your tanks are closed. Both gray and black. Check the valve handles physically, not just visually. I’ve seen pull handles that looked closed but weren’t seated properly. Pull them, then push them back firmly until they stop.
Step 2: Prep the sewer pedestal. Remove the cap from the site’s sewer inlet. Some are threaded, some just lift off. If the inlet is lower than your dump outlet (happens at older campgrounds), note it now. You may need to get creative with your hose support to create proper downhill slope.
Step 3: Connect the hose to your rig first. Twist it onto your RV’s bayonet fitting until it locks. Tug it. If it spins freely, it’s not locked. A loose connection at the rig end is the most common source of spills.
Step 4: Route the hose to the pedestal and insert the sewer-end fitting. Some campgrounds use a 4-inch inlet, others are 3-inch with an adapter. Most quality hose kits include a reducing fitting. Seat it firmly and, if possible, weigh it down with a small rock or use a fitting collar. Hoses back out under pressure.
Step 5: Set up your hose support under the full run. The hose should slope continuously downward from your rig to the pedestal. No sags, no valleys. Even a slight low point causes buildup.
Step 6: Dump black tank first. Always black first. You want the volume and velocity of the black dump to flush any residue through the line, then the gray tank rinse finishes the job. Dumping gray first is backward.
Step 7: Rinse your black tank. If your rig has a built-in tank rinser or a Tornado flush valve, use it now. Run it until the water coming out runs clear. This isn’t negotiable if you care about keeping your sensors reading accurately.
Step 8: Dump gray tank. Let it all run through. The gray water (soap, food particles, shower water) does a reasonable job of flushing residue out of the hose.
Step 9: Disconnect hose from pedestal end first. Cap your rig-side fitting before removing it from your RV. Then drain any residual water out of the hose by raising the rig end while holding the pedestal end down.
Step 10: Rinse your hose. Most campgrounds have a dedicated hose for this. Use it. Don’t use your drinking water hose to rinse sewer equipment. Store the hose in a dedicated sealed compartment, never near food storage or water supply.
Long-Term Connections: The Full-Hookup Site Trap
Staying on full hookups for a week or more changes everything. Most people leave the sewer hose connected and open the gray valve to drain continuously. That’s fine. But leaving the black valve open is one of the most destructive habits in RV ownership.
An open black valve on a full-hookup site means liquids drain out immediately, leaving solids behind. Over time you build what the RV service community charmingly calls a “pyramid of doom”, a solid mound of waste and tissue that hardens in your tank. I’ve replaced tank sensors on rigs that were only two years old because of this habit.
Keep the black tank valve closed. Open it every two to three days, or when the tank reaches two-thirds full. Give it enough volume that the flush has force behind it.
Gray valve can stay open. Gray water doesn’t have the same buildup dynamics, and most campgrounds require or prefer continuous gray drainage to avoid overflow at the site.
Odor and Backflow: Two Problems With Specific Solutions
Sewer odor in your RV is not normal and not something you accept. It has a cause, and usually it’s one of three things.
Dry P-traps. Every drain in your RV has a P-trap designed to hold water as a seal against sewer gases. If you haven’t used a sink, shower, or toilet in weeks, those traps dry out and gas comes straight up. Fix: pour a cup of water down every drain when you arrive at a new site.
Toilet seal failure. The rubber seal at the base of your toilet keeps tank gases out of the living space. When it dries out or cracks, you’ll smell the tank. Treat it with a rubber conditioner a few times a year. Thetford sells one that works well and costs about $8.
A loose or improperly seated sewer hose connection. If your hose isn’t sealed at the pedestal inlet, gases come back up. On a windy day you’ll smell it inside. A fitted collar or a weighted connection solves this.
Backflow is less common but worth knowing about. If a heavy rainstorm fills the campground sewer system, water can back up through your hose and into your gray or black tank. Some RVers use a backflow preventer valve on their sewer connection. I’ve only seen actual backflow happen twice in eight years, but both times it was at older private campgrounds after heavy rain. The risk is real enough to mention.

Neither option is strictly better. My first three years were almost entirely dump stations. It builds good habits and keeps costs down. The discipline of batch dumping is actually healthier for your tanks.
Eight years in, sewer connections are so routine they take me less than ten minutes. But that comfort came from learning the right sequence early, buying one good hose instead of three cheap ones, and respecting the closed-black-valve rule even when it felt inconvenient. The people I see struggling at campgrounds are almost always dealing with equipment that was never adequate or habits that were never corrected. Get the foundation right once, and this becomes the least interesting part of your day, which is exactly what it should be.
