Most RV owners are throwing money away. Not on fuel, not on campground fees, on service calls for problems they could’ve fixed themselves in an afternoon with a $40 kit from Amazon.

I’ll be honest: I spent my first year on the road terrified of touching anything mechanical. I’d call a mobile RV tech for things I now laugh about. Sixty-five dollars to tighten a connection on my water pump. Ninety bucks for a guy to reseat a roof vent lid I could’ve fixed with $8 of Dicor lap sealant. That embarrassment was actually useful, because it pushed me to get serious about learning what I could handle myself and what genuinely needed a professional.

Eight years in, I’d estimate I’ve saved somewhere between $12,000 and $16,000 in labor costs. That’s not a guess inflated for effect. I kept a rough log for the first four years, and the math held up. The skills aren’t exotic. Most of what breaks on an RV falls into predictable categories, and most of it is fixable by anyone who can watch a YouTube video and hold a screwdriver.

What surprised me was how much of it isn’t even mechanical. Sealing, caulking, cleaning, inspecting, half the battle is just being observant and not waiting until a small problem becomes a catastrophic one.

The Roof Is Where RVs Die

No exaggeration. Water intrusion from a failed roof seal is the single most expensive repair category in the RV world. I’ve talked to full-timers who scrapped a rig they loved because a slow roof leak went unnoticed for two seasons and rotted out the sidewall structure. The repair estimate was more than the coach was worth.

Walk your roof every 90 days. I know some people say twice a year. I say 90 days, especially if you’re driving frequently, because road vibration works sealant loose faster than UV alone.

What you’re looking for: cracking, shrinking, or lifting sealant around every roof penetration. That means vents, skylights, AC unit bases, TV antenna mounts, solar panel brackets, anything that pokes through or gets screwed down up there. Dicor self-leveling lap sealant (around $12 a tube) is the standard repair material for EPDM rubber roofs. For TPO roofs it’s slightly different, you want a TPO-compatible product, not just any sealant. Check what your roof material is before you buy anything. This matters more than most people realize.

Clean the area first. I use a 409 or simple dish soap solution, dry it completely, then apply. Dicor is forgiving; it flows into gaps. But it won’t stick to a dirty or wet surface, so don’t skip the cleaning step. Let it cure 24 hours before rain hits it if you can help it.

The other thing people miss: check the caulk around your slide-out seals and sidewall seams down at ground level too. Leaks don’t only come from above. I found a slow seam leak on my passenger side that had been wicking into the wall for I don’t know how long. Caught it during a routine walk-around when I noticed the interior wall felt slightly soft. Replaced about six feet of sealant with Geocel 2300 and some ProFlex RV, call it $30 in materials and three hours of my time. A shop would have charged $300 minimum just for labor.

The 12V DC side of your RV electrical system is approachable for most people. Battery connections, fuses, basic wiring to add a 12V outlet or a USB port, this is weekend-mechanic territory. What I stay more cautious about is the 120V AC side, especially anything touching the main breaker panel or shore power connections. Not because it’s impossibly complicated, but because a mistake there can start a fire while you’re asleep. I’ve rewired 12V circuits plenty of times. I’ve never touched my main breaker panel without a licensed electrician.

That said, one of the best DIY investments I ever made was adding a battery monitor. I run a Victron BMV-712 (around $100) and it changed how I managed my battery bank completely. I could see state of charge, charge/discharge rates, and time remaining. Before that I was guessing. Guessing led to two instances of pulling my AGMs below 50% state of charge repeatedly, which almost certainly shortened their life.

Surge protection is another one where DIY installation is easy and the payoff is high. I use a Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C hardwired unit. Installing it took about an hour and required basic comfort with 120V wiring, turn off the shore power breaker, wire it inline at the power entrance. The unit protects against both surges and low voltage situations, which are common at older campgrounds. If you’re not comfortable with that installation, get someone to do it once and it’s done. But it’s worth having.

A good plug-in surge protector like the Progressive Industries SSP-30XL requires zero installation and still gives you meaningful protection. It’s not as robust as hardwired, but it’s vastly better than nothing.

One thing I investigated more deeply than I expected to: solar and lithium battery upgrades. The research here is genuinely mixed on whether DIY lithium installs are safe without a proper Battery Management System and appropriate charger settings. I’ve done my own install with a 200Ah lithium bank, but I also spent two weeks reading before I touched anything. If you’re new to this, a kit from a company like Renogy or Battle Born that includes proper documentation is a much safer starting point than mixing random components.

Plumbing Is The Other Half of Your Weekend Education

Fresh water systems, gray and black tanks, water heater, all of this is very DIY-friendly if you approach it methodically.

Your water pump is going to fail eventually. It’s not a matter of if. The most common RVs run Shurflo or Flojet 12V pumps, and replacements run $40 to $80. I’ve replaced mine twice. Both times it took under an hour: turn off the water, disconnect the inlet and outlet lines (have a towel, there’s always residual water), disconnect the 12V leads, unbolt the old pump, reverse the process. The hardest part is usually working in a cramped under-sink cabinet.

Water heater anode rods are something absurdly few people actually change on schedule. If you have a tank-style water heater (Atwood or Suburban), there’s a magnesium anode rod that needs replacement roughly annually. It costs $8. The tool you need is a 1-1/16" socket. Neglect this and the rod corrodes away, then the tank corrodes, and you’re looking at a $300-400 water heater replacement. I’ve replaced mine on schedule every year since I learned this existed. Spent maybe $48 on rods total. My original water heater is still running.

Winterizing is something you can absolutely do yourself. The RV shops charge $80-150 for a winterization service that takes them about 30 minutes. You need a hand pump or a winterizing kit, RV antifreeze (not automotive), and patience. Bypass your water heater first so you’re not filling a 6-gallon tank with antifreeze unnecessarily. Run pink antifreeze through every faucet, the toilet, and the shower until it comes out pink. Blow out the lines with compressed air first if you want to use less antifreeze. I do both.

For your black and gray tanks, the one piece of advice that matters more than anything else: use enough water. Most odor and sensor problems I’ve seen in other people’s rigs come from not using enough water in the toilet and black tank. Treatments help, I use Happy Campers, around $18 for a large container, but they can’t compensate for a dry, cake-y tank.

What Actually Needs a Professional

This section matters, because pretending everything is DIY-able would be dishonest.

LP gas systems. Anything involving your propane lines, connections at the regulator, or appliance gas valves should be inspected and repaired by a certified RV tech or LP gas technician. I’m comfortable checking for leaks with soapy water at the connections I can see. I’m not comfortable doing my own flare fittings on a propane line. If you smell gas and can’t immediately identify a loose connection, don’t guess.

Slide-out mechanisms, especially hydraulic systems, can get complicated fast. Basic lubrication (I use Slide-Out Lube on the toppers and rail grease on the gears) is DIY. A slide that won’t retract or extend, or one that’s grinding and binding, usually means something structural or mechanical that you want diagnosed correctly before you make it worse.

Generator carburetor rebuilds, major engine work on a Class A or C, frame or chassis alignment issues, hire those out. Know your limits. The goal of DIY maintenance is to save money and be more self-sufficient, not to turn a $500 problem into a $2,000 one by being overconfident.

A Few Tools Worth Having From Day One

You don’t need a full shop. But a couple of things genuinely earn their space:

A good multimeter (I’ve used a Fluke 115 for years, about $90), a cordless drill, a basic socket set with both metric and standard, a quality caulk gun (the cheap ones make a mess), and a headlamp with good output. Add a water pressure regulator and a whole-house style inline water filter to your hose setup, those aren’t maintenance tools exactly, but they prevent maintenance problems by protecting your pump and lines from pressure spikes and sediment.

Leveling blocks deserve a mention here too. Properly leveling your rig isn’t just comfort, it’s maintenance. Your refrigerator (if it’s absorption type) needs to be reasonably level to work correctly and to avoid damage to the cooling unit.
